Stroke tutorial

Stroke is a sudden loss of brain function that is caused when the blood supply to part of the brain has been disrupted.  It is the leading cause of adult long-term disability and the second leading cause of death.  Although about 70% of people who suffer a stroke are over the age of 65, it can also occur in younger people.

Symptoms of a stroke can be: unexpected onset of numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, trouble speaking or understanding, difficulties in walking or seeing with one or both eyes and severe headache with no known cause.  Being able to recognise the early signs and symptoms of someone having a stroke and getting to hospital as soon as possible can reduce the impact of this serious acute condition.

This tutorial explains what a stroke is and how a stroke can affect your life.  It describes the most common risk factors for having a stroke, including some which you can influence, and how stroke is usually diagnosed and managed.
